Matt Archer: Monster Hunter

Kendra C. Highley
on the back:
Fourteen-year-old Matt Archer spends his days studying Algebra, hanging out with his best friend and crushing on the Goddess of Greenhill High, Ella Mitchell. To be honest, he thinks his life is pretty lame until he discovers something terrifying on a weekend camping trip at the local state park.
Monsters are real. And living in his backyard.
But that's not the half of it. After Matt is forced to kill a strange creature to save his uncle, he finds out that the weird knife he took from his uncle's bag has a secret, one that will change Matt's life. The knife was designed with one purpose: to hunt monsters. And it's chosen Matt as its wielder.
Now Matt's part of a world he didn't know existed, working with a covert military unit dedicated to eliminating walking nightmares. Faced with a prophecy about a looming dark war, Matt soon realizes his upcoming Algebra test is the least of his worries.
His new double life leaves Matt wondering which is tougher: hunting monsters or asking Ella Mitchell for a date?

I received an ARC of this novel as part of the blog tour and am very excited to be writing my first review for Zone Out mode!

Matt Archer is your average 14 year old high school freshman.  All he wants is the girl of his dreams to notice him when he discovers he has been chosen to be a monster hunter.  The story follows Matt on an adventure, both physical and emotional, as he discovers more about his quest and himself.

What a ride!  Matt is the heart of this story and is a really wonderful, likable young man.  I love when a character evolves and matures and that definitely happens here with our protagonist.  He begins as the skinny, scrawny underdog and ends well on his way to being a man.  His Uncle Mike, during monster hunter training, points out Matt's strengths - grace under pressure, quickness, agility, etc., which were all things Matt hadn't realized about himself at the time.  I love that there is a focus on the positive and that Matt learns to embrace the things that make him uniquely him.

There is enough action and intrigue here to keep anyone entertained the whole way through.  Other strengths are the emphasis on family and the realism of the everyday situations.  Matt goes through many of the things adolescent boys deal with and he does so with a keen sense of humor.  Also, the cannon surrounding the monsters is different and refreshing and will keep the readers hooked.  I think that this book will appeal to anyone who likes fantasy or urban fantasy, especially boys in the 10-14 age range.

Also, as a parent and an educator, I found the "military man turned monster hunter" angle interesting.  This book could be a very good tool for a child who has a deployed parent or family member and is having a hard time processing their feelings about it.

And, have no fear, a sequel is in the works!  Thanks Ms. Highly for a entertaining read!
